NCSA’s Quantum Computing Interest Group is proud to welcome Physics Professor and IQUIST Director Brian DeMarco for a presentation on “The Frontier of Quantum Computing and Networking Technology” at 11 a.m. on March 20 in Room 1030 at NCSA. Quantum technologies are rapidly advancing so please join us for discussion, networking and complimentary coffee and cookies! A Zoom option is available for those unable to attend in person.

Quantum technologies are rapidly advancing and have the potential to accelerate computing, advance science and improve the accuracy and sensitivity of physical sensors. In this presentation, DeMarco will explain how quantum bits, or qubits, are different compared with conventional devices, and share the state-of-the-art advances in quantum computing and networking, discuss open challenges and describe the national landscape and activities at UIUC.

Brian DeMarco has been a faculty member in the Physics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since 2003. His research team uses atoms, molecules and light to investigate many-particle quantum states, distributed quantum computing and quantum networking. DeMarco currently serves as the Director of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST), as Vice-Chair of the American Physical Society (APS) Panel on Public Affairs (POPA) and on the National Academy of Science Intelligence Science and Technology Experts Group (ISTEG). He is also the co-lead for the quantum thrust of the IBM–Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute (IIDAI) and is the Principal Investigator and Director of the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute on Hybrid Quantum Architectures and Networks.
