Engaging in Continuous Improvement Through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Jenny Amos (Bioengineering)

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in an approach for faculty who want to systematically study their teaching to improve student learning. In many ways, this means thinking of the classroom just like another potential research setting. Engaging in SoTL includes many stages, but the first step is to engage in reflective practice about teaching and learning in your classroom. Once a potential improvement is identified, the instructor needs to frame and conduct a study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of teaching practice. It is surprisingly difficult to both develop a good question and identify appropriate methods to test the research question. After a study is conducted, the instructor must reflect on the evidence and continue to make changes. Through this seminar, attendees will gain an understanding of the steps of SoTL and reflect on ways that SoTL can be incorporated into their own teaching practice.
