Title: The (mis)perception of speech in adverse conditions: stimulus and listener factors

Abstract: Communication often occurs in noisy environments, like restaurants, that involve multiple competing sound sources.  Under such conditions listeners must rely on processing partial information to understand the intended message.  The ability to understand a message depends on listener factors involving auditory and cognitive processing to extract the partial speech from the complex auditory scene.  Speech understanding also depends on stimulus factors such as the acoustic and linguistic properties of the partially extracted speech.  Analysis of these stimulus and listener factors provides a detailed view that goes beyond average correct scores to explain the perception and misperception by individual listeners of specific words within the complex auditory scene.
