Thin film intermetallics: new structure-types and unconventional superconductivity

Abstract: In this presentation I will discuss epitaxial intermetallic films belonging to the "square-net" class of materials. With a focus on LaSb2, we have discovered a new structure-type which hosts enhanced superconductivity compared to bulk crystals. The chemical flexibility of this compound allows us to dope with cerium, which induces magnetic fluctuations that strongly influence the superconducting phase. The most striking outcome of these experiments is the ability to induce a magnetic-field induced superconducting phase at a critical doping concentration.

Bio: Joseph Falson is an assistant professor in the department of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Caltech. He completed his postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research after his PhD at the University of Tokyo. This research focuses on probing delicate electronic orders of correlated electrons in epitaxial thin films.
