Religious Observances

Passages from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Scriptures of Sikh Gurus, are read out loud during the day, and lectures are organized to preach and teach the scriptures, especially the ones of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Sikhs observing the Martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib gather at the gurdwaras, the places of worship for Sikhs, and sing hymns while dancing in joy. At early morning there are hymns, or Asa di Var, followed by an exposition of the Guru Granth Sahib. During the day there is food served, prayer, and joyous singing. Around sunset it is time for the Rehras, or evening prayers. Some students or employees may request scheduling accommodations in order to observe.
