On August 8, the Spurlock Museum begins its Spurlock Sundays program series for 2021. These free, family-friendly programs are held on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00–3:30 pm. Program themes vary each month, but can include crafts, storytelling, and hands-on experiences with cultural artifacts.

The first 2 Spurlock Sundays—August 8 and September 12—will feature crafts inspired by artworks currently on display as part of this year’s Great ARTdoors program. On August 8, visitors will create pinwheels suggested by Judy Lee’s (C3H4O2)n kinetic sculptures (external link) in Douglass Park. The September 12 activity will be kite-making influenced by Mohan Tracy’s artwork Waiting to Fly (external link) in Crystal Lake Park.

The Great ARTdoors is a local initiative of the Spurlock Museum, 40North, Urbana Park District, Champaign Park District, and Urbana Arts and Culture. The program, which began in 2020, was created to help support artists during the pandemic and provide solace and community through the display of outdoor artworks placed throughout Champaign-Urbana. The success of the 2020 Great ARTdoors resulted in the call for and creation of the second set of artworks currently on display through October 31. For a list of the artworks and their locations, visit The Great ARTdoors exhibit.
