Faculty Seminar Series on Teaching & Learning

Theme: "The Art of the Engaging, Responsive Lecture"

Instructors “can improve student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference; many of which can be put into practice in a single class period” (J. Lang, Small Teaching).

Come join us as we explore a number of these strategies and approaches in “The Art of the Engaging, Responsive Lecture”

You are invited to join a dynamic learning community by participating in this specially designed workshop series for all faculty (across all disciplines and rank). We’ll share strategies and best practices from research-based pedagogy. Come and meet new colleagues. Great conversations and handouts guaranteed.

Session 2: Facilitating a Responsive Discussion for Students to Ask and Answer Questions

You include questions in your teaching as an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge. But ….

  • You ask a question and you’re met with silence?
  • Or do the same students always eagerly raise their hands to answer?
  • Or perhaps students don’t know how to answer questions that require higher level thinking?

We all know the importance of incorporating questions in our teaching. Questions serve to motivate students, to assess student understanding, and to engage them in a thought-provoking discussion. Effective questioning skills require us to plan carefully not only the type of questions, but also the timing and sequencing.  Come join this session to learn about not only on how to create an effective question, but also how to encourage students to participate.

*This workshop counts towards completion of any of CITL's Teaching Certificates. To learn more about our Teaching Certificate program please visit https://go.illinois.edu/teaching_certificates.

Please mark these dates on your calendar. We hope that you will be able to participate in all the workshops in this series.
