Quantum simulation of Hubbard models: From unconventional superconductors to lattice gauge theories 

Abstract: Recent advances in quantum simulation, in a range of experimental platforms, allow for unprecedented microscopic studies of strongly correlated quantum matter. This talk will focus on a long-standing goal of the field: The study of fermionic Hubbard models. On one hand, the plain-vanilla square lattice Hubbard model is believed to underly high-temperature superconductivity. On the other hand, variations of the Hubbard model can describe other unconventional superconductors, and under appropriate circumstances allows to even realize emergent non-Abelian gauge theories akin to the models underlying quark confinement. This talk will provide an overview of the state of the field, highlighting symbiotic efforts of theoretical and experimental work, and explain future prospects such as reaching phase-coherent superconductivity and realizing lattice gauge theories in table-top experiments. New insights obtained, broadly speaking, by quantum simulation efforts into the origin of strong pairing in doped Hubbard models will also be discussed, showcasing the ability of quantum gas microscopy experiments to reveal the microscopic structure of the emergent charge carriers in these fascinating systems whose properties are governed by strong fermionic correlations.

Bio: Fabian Grusdt holds a Professorship for Quantum Many-Body Theory at LMU Munich since 2021, where his research focuses on quantum simulations of strongly correlated quantum matter with ultracold atoms and photons. His research interests include unconventional superconductivity, topological quantum matter and lattice gauge theories. He received his PhD from the TU Kaiserslautern (Germany) in 2015, after which he joined Harvard’s physics department as a Moore Postdoctoral Fellow. Following a short postdoc at TU Munich, in 2019 he started his own research group and become a member of Munich’s Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST). In 2020 he received one of Europe’s prestigious ERC Starting grants supporting his work on quantum simulations of the doped Hubbard model.
