Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships enable undergraduate and graduate students to study in modern foreign languages along with area studies, international studies, or international or area aspects of professional studies. FLAS recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enrolled full-time.
For the academic year 2024-2025:
Graduate FLAS fellows receive up to $18,000 towards tuition and fees and a $20,000 stipend paid in monthly installments over the course of the academic year. Undergraduate FLAS fellows receive up to $10,000 towards tuition and fees and a $5,000 stipend paid in monthly installments over the course of the academic year.
For the summer 2024:
Up to $5,000 towards tuition and fees and a $3,500 stipend.
Eligible Languages
Arabic, Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Modern Greek, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian. French, German and Spanish are eligible languages for the graduate students only.
