Improving the Work Environment and Patient Experience in Operating Rooms and Emergency Departments

ABSTRACT - Managing patient flow and staff workload are extremely important issues in both the operating room (OR) and in the emergency department (ED) or upon patient arrival. This seminar will provide a survey of Dr. Taaffe’s research that addresses how delivery of care on the day-of-surgery or upon patient arrival to the ED can be more efficient through physical or procedural design improvements.

BIO – Kevin Taaffe is the Harriet & Jerry Dempsey Professor and Department Chair in Industrial Engineering at Clemson University. Dr. Taaffe’s research interests include the application of simulation and optimization in healthcare, production, and transportation logistics. Dr. Taaffe focuses on healthcare logistics problems that range from patient flow to scheduling to clinical space capacity management. He works with clinicians, administrators, managers, and support staff to identify and solve problems related to the patient and staff experience within emergency medicine, surgical services, and sterile processing.
