Abstract
Dr. Robert A. Dalrymple is the Distinguished Professor of Coastal Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University. He is also Willard & Lillian Hackerman Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, retiring in 2016 after 14 years. Prior to that time he was the E.C. Davis Professor of Civil Engineering and founding director of the Center for Applied Coastal Research at the University of Delaware, where he taught for 29 years.
His research is in the field of coastal engineering, including water waves and their impact on shorelines, structures, and the ocean bottom and natural hazards, such as rip currents and tsunamis. Current research concerns Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and the application of the open-source numerical method GPUSPH to free surface flows using graphics cards for computation.
Prof. Dalrymple served for many years as Chair of COPRI's Coastal Engineering Research Council until 2014. He has served on eight National Research Council committees related to coastal issues. He is the founder of coastal_list, a list-serve for coastal engineers worldwide.
He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2006. The Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain inducted him as a Corresponding Member in 2013. He is a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a H. Burr Steinbach Visiting Scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 2013.
He received his degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B., 1967), University of Hawaii (MS., 1968) and University of Florida (Ph.D., 1973).
