The presentation will provide insight in the developments in the petrochemical industry that might lead to large or at least larger scale application of membrane technology in our operations. One of the areas where a large market for ceramic membranes is foreseen is the tertiary treatment of water that is co-produced with the production of oil and natural gas. These waste water streams are often very stable oil in water emulsions with a dispersed oil content of up to several thousand ppm. Ceramic membrane technology might be a cost-effective solution for the treatment of these streams. The deployment is however still hindered by a number of teething issues with respect to fouling and cleaning of these membranes. 

Another area where there are opportunities for the deployment of inorganic membranes is pre-combustion carbon capture. In the past years large steps forward have been made in the development of especially palladium and palladium alloy membranes that are very suitable for cost- and energy-effective pre-combustion carbon capture. The presentation will highlight the developments in this area and sketch the way forward. Another interesting field for hydrogen separation is the use of hydrogen (proton) conducting membranes which are of particular interest in view of the anticipated electrification of the industry.

Last, but certainly not least, the presentation will touch upon solvent resistant nanofiltration developments in our industry, focusing on the treatment of gasoline as well as natural gas condensates.

Arian Nijmeijer holds a PhD in Inorganic Material Science from the University of Twente. He is Principal Science Expert Membrane Technology in Shell with 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. In this role, Arian coordinates membrane research, development and deployment ranging from aqueous and non-aqueous filtrations to gas separation as well as from ceramic and metal membranes and membrane reactors to a large range of polymeric membranes. One of his focus areas is hydrogen production and purification.

Since November 2006, Arian is leading the Inorganic Membrane group of the University of Twente as a 0.2 FTE full professor.
