The Merit Program brings together instructional and administrative expertise from multiple LAS units to support and mentor over 1200 students and 50 teaching assistants in large chemistry, biology, and mathematics service courses each semester. These first and second-year courses are often overwhelming for students and can contribute to increased STEM attrition. To enhance the student experience, Merit sections provide a student-centered atmosphere and foster the formation of an academic community. This presentation will offer perspectives from experienced Merit Program instructors related to the planning and facilitation of active learning classes via the Merit style of instruction.
