Clear, accessible communication is essential when working across languages and cultures. This interactive workshop introduces Plain Language as an intercultural and inclusive communication practice, with a focus on reducing linguistic and cultural barriers for diverse audiences. Participants will examine how word choice, sentence structure, organization, and design affect understanding—particularly for international students and scholars and others navigating U.S. systems in a second language. The session offers practical strategies for engaging audiences, simplifying complex or institutional language, and designing messages that are easier to read, hear, and act on.

Open to faculty, staff, and international scholars. Registration highly encouraged.

About GUIDE: Global Understanding, Intercultural Development, and Engagement Sessions

The GUIDE Sessions provide professional learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and scholars who want to strengthen their ability to work effectively across cultures and support international students and colleagues. These interactive sessions offer practical tools grounded in intercultural research, helping participants refine their communication skills, deepen cultural understanding, and create more inclusive academic and workplace environments.

GUIDE Sessions are open to all campus professionals and do not require prior experience with intercultural training. Participants are encouraged to attend multiple GUIDE sessions to build a well-rounded foundation in intercultural competence.
