The Economics Department is proud to announce Stefan Dercon as the Spring 2024 David Kinley Lecturer. Professor Dercon will present "Gambling on Development: Why Some Countries Win and Others Lose". The lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 3rd from 4:00-5:00 pm in 120 Architecture Building, with a reception to follow.

Stefan Dercon is a Professor of Economic Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government and the Economics Department at the University of Oxford. He is also the Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies. His research interests concern what keeps some people and countries poor: the failures of markets, governments, and politics, mainly in Africa, and how to achieve change. Join Stefan Dercon as he discusses his latest book, Gambling on Development: Why some countries win, and others lose. Drawing on his academic research as well as his policy experience across three decades and 40-odd countries, he will explore why some countries have managed to settle on elite bargains favoring growth and development, and others did not.

The lecture will be followed by a reception with light refreshments. Please reach out to Professor Marieke Kleemans at kleemans@illinois.edu with any questions related to this event.
