The presentation will consist of three parts. In the first, the theme of cabotage navigation in the economy of interprovincial trade in Brazil in the 19th century will be addressed. Next, historical aspects of Mamanguape and its commercial practices carried out from the Port of Salema de Mamanguape (a city on the north coast of Paraíba) with other provincial ports will be highlighted. In the third, and finally, the discussion will focus on the variety of people that made up Mamanguape, a territory with a strong indigenous presence until the present time (21st century), of the Potiguara ethnic group, as well as the changes that occurred in their sociocultural and economic dynamics that led this area to become, in the 19th century, an important space for agriculture (sugar, cotton, polyculture, etc.) and the formation of urban activities in Paraíba. The economy determined by the landlord class sought to serve their interests and those of other individuals who began to compete for the lands in that location, increased, above all, by the cabotage trade in Independent Brazil.
