Come listen to a bilingual story in Japanese and English!
Bring your children to East Asian Story Time, and enjoy a Kamishibai telling of “How The Years Were Named” or 来年は何どし. This story follows the traditional folktale describing how the years of the Lunar New Year were decided.
A popular form of street theater in the 1930s and post-war Japan, Kamishibai (紙芝居) or “paper play” is a set of illustrated boards or cards that tell a story.
Co-sponsored by The Urbana Free Library and the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Illinois.

The Center for East Asian and Pacific, in partnership with the Urbana Free Library, presents East Asian Story Time, a monthly family event series celebrating cultural and language diversity in our communities. Each bilingual storytime event will feature a story read in English and Chinese, Japanese, or Korean to spark children’s interest in East Asian languages and cultures. All are welcome!
