The Gilman International Scholarship Program is planning to provide over 3,500 awards of up to $5,000 (plus an additional $3,000 supplement for critical languages) for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue summer, semester, or year-long study abroad opportunities in other countries. This is a need-based award, and to be eligible, students currently must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant.

The National and International Scholarships Program is willing to assist in reviewing your scholarship application material (topscholars@illinois.edu) – in fact, we welcome the opportunity to help make your application more competitive! As such, we are offering two days of sessions about the Gilman Scholarship. On September 2, our office will offer an informational overview session and discussion with previous Gilman recipients, followed on September 3 with a workshop designed to help students begin to craft their application statements. A streamlined, online session will also be offered for those who can’t attend in person.

The dates and times are as follows:

Thursday, September 2 from 3:30-4:30: Informational session and alumni Q&A at 1002 Lincoln Hall

Friday, September 3 from 9:00-9:30: online Gilman overview. Please register at:

https://illinois.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIvf-Ctqj8uHtMABlhsZVEDbzot-OBnTo96

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting (session will be recorded as well).

Friday, September 3 from 3:00-4:00: Workshop on how to craft your application essays at

514 IUB (Illini Union Bookstore Building, enter near Coble Hall).

For full scholarship eligibility criteria and the online application, please access the Gilman Program website at https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/.

Please note that you will need to meet study abroad deadlines and enter the information of both your study abroad advisor and the Financial Aid Office (Bethany Carmien Onwodi or Erin Countryman). Nearly one in three applicants are expected to receive the award this year, so you have great odds at earning $5,000! The scholarship deadline for study abroad spring 2022, summer 2022, fall 2022 or 2022 academic year is October 5, 2021.
