What is it like to be a politician in a body that aims to transcend national interests? Whatskills are learned serving as a legislator in a body that has had to negotiate the terms of its own influence across twenty-seven countries and nearly half a billion people?

This semester, come get an insider's view on the European Parliament through a series of conversations with Former Members of the European Parliament about the negotiation of “European” values such as democracy, human rights, tolerance, green initiatives, and social policies. Each conversation will focus on “cases” of past projects, legislation, initiatives, or crises that the Former MEP found particularly rewarding, vexing, or enlightening for understanding the negotiation of European unity and the role that themulti-national institution of the European Parliament hasplayed in it. These conversations are open to the publicas part of the meetings of a new EU Center course, “The Everyday Making of the European Parliament and Parliamentarians.”
