PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The 3 week trip to Cape Town will feature cultural/historical tours and 2 weeks of service work. Participants will choose volunteer work in health clinics, shelters for women with children, community gardens, children’s hospital, center for children with disabilities, schools (when in session), or possibly small animal veterinary clinic.

Students will see first-hand:

  • Introduction to South African history, politics, and legacy of apartheid.
  • Role of youth in liberation struggle.
  • Post-apartheid society.
  • Families and Children; educational policy, family dynamics.
  • Post-apartheid challenges: HIV/AIDS, poverty, crime.
  • Community resiliency; health and food security.

Volunteer sites available to us typically include child care at orphanage or shelter for women and children, children with severe disabilities, health clinics, work with ill or recovering children, community garden network and marketing center, small animal vet clinic. VACorps will work on placements based on your interests as much as possible, though if health clinics are willing to work with us, by law, most of our experience there will be observational, as we do not have medical training.

App Deadline: April 15th, 2020

**Dates and budget will be discussed at the info session
