Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning

This workshop explores different types of student motivation, and how we as educators can help students make the best use of it during our classes. Motivation is tricky and changeable throughout the semester, and is contingent upon variable factors from how busy or stressed students are to how they feel about our classes. This workshop will use the chapter on motivation in James M. Lang’s Small Teaching (2nd ed., 2021) to explore different types of student motivation, particularly self-transcendence, and to find ways to combine them with Learning Objectives and Assessments. This can help students find more intrinsic motivation to excel in their assignments and coursework, and to feel more confident in taking responsibility for their own learning.

This workshop is part of the CITL Summer Course Design Series. You do not have to attend the entire series to attend this workshop, but we do think you'll have the best experience if you attend most or all of the workshops.

This workshop counts towards the Graduate Teacher Certificate, the Certificate in Foundations of Teaching, or the Teacher Scholar Certificate.
