Session 4 The Art of the Enhanced Lecture (Part II): Active Teaching = Engaged Active Learning by Our Students
Students: Being in class is so boring. I’m not learning anything and I’m just sitting here.
Teacher: Why aren’t the students more engaged? This content is so exciting and important
The lecture mode is the oldest teaching method and the traditional lecture method is the most widely used across the world (Smith & Valentine, 2012). However, when compared to other teaching methods, it is often not as effective in areas such as student retention of information, transfer of knowledge, and problem-solving.
Last semester, we offered Part I which focused on how to design your course and structure the content for helping your students learn more efficiently. This spring for Part II, we will focus on supporting our students to be more active and reflective partners in their learning. Learning is not a spectator sport (Chickering & Gamson). Students must be cognitively, physically, and affectively engaged for deeper learning and retention to occur. A bonus is the opportunity to informally assess your students learning. Join this session to explore and implement effective active learning strategies for enhancing your lecture.
