Negative space is the formless background area around, behind and in-between a 2-D subject or 3-D object. As in life, negative ‘space’ or circumstances can point to opportunities for us to learn how to foster positive perspectives or behaviors.

NOTAN is Japanese word which means “dark-light” – or the use of dark and light. It is symbolized in an art form using lines and shapes to create symmetrical designs that represents the interaction between positive and negative space, between ‘good’ and ‘bad’. In connection to Spurlock’s outgoing Black Joy Project (*ends 11/29), come and transform a negative into a positive!

Spurlock Sundays are free, drop-in programs held on the second Sunday of the month from 1:00 pm–3:00 pm and are open to visitors of all ages. Spurlock Sunday activities can include crafts, games, performances, and hands-on experiences with cultural artifacts.
