Rare Book & Manuscript Library Events

The Rare Book & Manuscript Library is once again teaming up with the Champaign Public Library, this time for a virtual crafty event! Interested in learning about medieval manuscripts? In this class, we'll go over what a medieval manuscript is and how they are created. This includes talking about making parchment, ink, and quills, as well as a calligraphy lesson. Crafters of all skill levels are welcome!

Instruction provided by Ruthann Mowry, Siobhan McKissic and Carrie Lingscheit. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library (RBML) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the largest publicly accessible special collections repositories in the United States. The collections—nearly 500,000 volumes and just over two linear miles of manuscript material—encompass the broad areas of literature, history, art, theology, philosophy, technology, and the natural sciences. Watch our previous partnerships with CPL:   The History of Witchcraft and Scrap, Excerpt, List: Making Indigenous Archives  on CPL's YouTube channel.

These workshops are very popular and "sell out" quickly. Here are the details:

  • Registration opens  October 1 at 9:00 am. Registration is required.
  • Craft kits are available starting October 1 at 9:00am and are   first come-first served, while supplies last.
  • The Zoom link will be emailed to all registrants a minimum of 24 hours prior to the event.

Crafty Adults events are recorded and available to view on  the library's   YouTube channel. Most webinars are available to view within 72 hours from the live webinar.
