Abstract:
Unexpected cost shifts (or shocks) can influence management decisions and outcomes across different domestic farm types in the U.S. Such shocks can directly or indirectly increase the cost of farm inputs. Using national farm-level data, we directly assess the pass-through of fuel price shocks to fertilizer expenditure and total farm expenditure for farms specialized in crop production. Preliminary analysis indicates a larger pass-through for small and midsize farms. Future analysis will use structural cost functions that can be expanded to analyze different types of cost shifters.
