Abstract: The Luttinger Theorem is viewed as an inviolate structure in condensed matter physics. This theorem is often stated as the invariance of the Fermi surface volume to interactions. More subtlety the theorem establishes the number of sign changes of the single-particle Green function as a conserved quantity, namely the physical charge. However, I will show that the theorem is not true in general. I will show that the failure of this theorem stems from an anomaly and hence is rooted in topology. Various failures of the theorem will be discussed in cuprate physics.
