Originating Calendar: Astronomy Colloquium Speaker Calendar; The galactic baryon cycle is a dynamic process that governs how gas flows into and out of galaxies, fuels star formation in the disk, and is stirred up by stellar feedback. Thanks to the rise of large photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic surveys, it is now possible to reconstruct 3D spatial and dynamical models of gas and stars in the solar neighborhood (and beyond), two key observational constraints probing the physics of the galactic baryon cycle. In this talk, I will discuss ongoing efforts that leverage “3D dust mapping” alongside a host of other techniques to chart out the distribution of spiral structure, molecular clouds, superbubbles, and fountain flows in our home Galaxy, with the goal of better understanding the cycling of material and its conversion into stars. I will conclude by previewing the future of stellar modeling and 3D dust mapping in the era of the Roman Space Telescope, which will probe the physics of the baryon cycle in entirely new regimes across the Milky Way’s disk.
