Physics - Condensed Matter Seminar

Neutron scattering is an exceptional probe of magnetism in quantum materials. In this seminar, I will discuss neutron scattering from a user facility perspective with an emphasis on the history of the technique, the user program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and neutron scattering instrumentation. I will then cover some basic principles of magnetic quantum materials to illustrate how both conventional and exotic magnetic states arise in these systems. Finally, I will discuss a few science examples from own neutron scattering research on a subgroup of quantum materials called heavy transition metal magnets that will highlight the power of this technique for elucidating their static and dynamic properties.
