Professor Adrian Johns (History, University of Chicago) will present a lecture drawn from his new book The Science of Reading: Information, Media, and Mind in Modern America (2023). Since the 19th century, scientists have sought to understand how exactly reading works and thus how best to teach it. These early studies reveal fascinating informational iniquities and proposed methods to bridge those gaps. Our modern information society reflects these early problems, as illustrated by the current “reading wars” that are still occurring.
