This will be a three-hour workshop. During the first half of the workshop, Dr. Elisa Frühauf Garcia will present to the students how we can edit Wikipedia in order to make women's history less underrepresented there and to have more biographical entries about them, but also including them in general history entries.
This presentation is based on the work Dr. Frühauf Garcia has been doing with her students at the History Department of Fluminense Federal University, in collaboration with Wikipedia, focusing on Native women's history. She will be joined via Zoom by some of her students from Fluminense Federal University and they will have a chance to explain how their work on the project influenced their training as historians.
This initiative is also related to the WikiProject Women in Red, dedicated to increasing the number of entries and information regarding women in Wikipedia.
In the second half of the workshop, the students will experience editing Wikipedia themselves. We will log in and work with some preselected entries, trying to find women who were important historical agents but are missing in general narratives and/or do not have their own entries.
This workshop is funded by a grant from the Women and Gender in a Global Perspectives Program and the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies.
