Dr. Salah Issa earned his B.S degree in Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University. After working for a few years in consumer products, he returned to graduate school and earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Purdue University. Before joining UIUC as an assistant professor in 2020, Dr. Issa worked at Epic Corp and USDA NIFA, serving as AAAS Fellow and an Emerging Leader in Biosecurity Initiative (ELBI) Fellow. Dr. Issa’sresearch is focused on injury prevention through predictive algorithms, evaluating new technologies, and implementing technologies that reduce or remove hazards. Recognizing that agriculture ranks among the deadliest occupations, with injury rates remaining relatively stable since the 1990s, he explores new training and prevention strategies. One of his focus areas is testing solutions to handle out-of-condition issues facing the grain handling and storage industry to reduce grain entrapments. His extension program focuses on agricultural injury trends in Illinois and promotes a culture of safety among Illinois farmers and workers.
