Silicon Carbide Photonics for Quantum Networking
Abstract: Harnessing the full power of quantum technologies will require reliable transmission of quantum information. One method of accomplishing this task leverages existing classical network structures by encoding quantum states onto photons. However, the “no-cloning” theorem of quantum mechanics forbids the perfect duplication of an arbitrary quantum state without destroying it; thereby inhibiting the use of signal amplification to overcome inevitably lossy channels. To solve this, many forms of quantum “repeaters” have been proposed which utilize entanglement swapping to exchange information between quantum nodes. I will discuss the preliminary design and testing of an integrated quantum repeater platform utilizing defects in silicon carbide (SiC). Specifically, the neutral divacancy (VV0) displays the desired atom-like spin and optical structure, where world-record coherence times have been measured. I will highlight our efforts to realize photonic devices that enable enhanced photon collection efficiency, and electrical tunability of single photon emission, in CMOS compatible SiC on insulator. I will also discuss the characterization and control of VV0 ensembles and single defects in bulk SiC.
