Probing Quantum Matter with Scanning Microwave Microscopy

Abstract: Scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) has demonstrated its unique advantage in probing the electrical properties of diverse quantum materials with nanoscale spatial resolution. This talk will provide an overview of its technical basics and areas of application. As a representative example, I will dive into the details of a newly developed SMM setup operating at millikelvin temperatures, with a proof-of-concept experiment on the chiral edge modes in magnetic topological insulators. I will also discuss the next generation of SMM based on superconductor resonators and its potential applications in solid-state quantum information hardware.

Student Information: Zhanzhi Jiang is a postdoctoral fellow working for Angela Kou researching the scanning microwave resonator.
