The study of embedded surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds has led to several major advances in the fields of geometry, topology, and geometric group theory. In this talk we address the higher dimensional analogue of embedded codimension-1 submanifolds in finite volume hyperbolic manifolds, with a focus on the existence of totally geodesic 3-manifolds in small volume hyperbolic 4-manifolds.
