Mosquito-borne disease transmission:  Insights from the laboratory and the field

Ryan C. Smith, PhD

Department of Entomology

Iowa State University

The overarching research goals of my lab are to better understand the environmental and physiological factors that determine how and why mosquitoes are able to transmit disease, and have approached these questions using both laboratory- and field-based experiments. Our lab-based experiments have focused on identifying components of physiology and the immune system in defining mosquito vector competence. This has largely focused on understanding the mechanisms of malaria parasite killing, demonstrating integral roles of mosquito immune cells in this process and highlighting the importance of multiple blood meals on mosquito-borne disease transmission. In addition, with oversight of mosquito and tick surveillance for the state of Iowa, our laboratory has also utilized mosquito surveillance data to better understand West Nile virus (WNV) transmission dynamics in Iowa and across the US. This includes the influence of abiotic (environmental and ecological) and biotic factors (mosquito physiology) that ultimately define WNV epidemiology.
