Abstract:
In this talk I will discuss my teaching philosophy, which focuses on the two ideas of “Utilize Empathy” and “Foster Collaboration”. I will begin by examining these ideas in greater detail, and explaining both what these ideas mean to me, and how they lead to effective education. After this, I will discuss lessons I have learned from my own experience as both the head TA and a lecturer for ECE 110 here at U of I. After discussing some of the key lessons and pedagogical takeaways from 110, I will describe my vision and plan for a new course that I would be excited to teach in the CS department, “Machine Learning for Non-Majors”. In this section of my talk, I will discuss how I would run and implement this course, as a means of demonstrating how I think about education and pedagogy. To conclude, I will discuss a few long-term pedagogical innovations and research projects I would be excited to pursue, and how they could further enhance the experience of the students in courses I teach.
Bio:
Kevin Wandke received his B.S. in Mechanical Science and Engineering in 2019, and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2022, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He previously interned at Argonne National laboratory as a member of the SULI program, and at General Electric's Global research center as an intern in the Edison Engineering Program. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Chancellor's Scholarship, Olsen award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and a Mavis Future Faculty Fellow in the Grainger College of Engineering. Kevin’s research focuses on two major themes, computational modeling, and pedagogy. Within the theme of computational modeling, he has focused on ways to use machine learning to accelerate the modeling of complex multiphysics processes. Within the area of pedagogy, Kevin has focused on ways to provide adaptive instruction, as well as ways to deliver content through various modalities to improve the learning experiences of students.
