Abstract:
Digital hardware is ubiquitous, so much so that its development is often taken for granted. However, as exemplified by the CHIPS Act, the need to develop the hardware workforce is greater than ever. To meet these demands, it is essential that hardware design education is both engaging and inclusive to recruit, train, and inspire the next generation of hardware designers. In this talk, I will discuss my philosophy and experiences teaching computer architecture and hardware design courses. As part of these experiences, I will explain improvements made to courses while coping with constraints as well creating an entirely new course on agile hardware design.

Bio:
Scott Beamer is an assistant professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He teaches courses on computer architecture and logic design, and he has even created a new course on agile hardware design. He earned his PhD in Computer Science with an outside minor in Teaching from the University of California, Berkeley, where he also received an Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award. At UCSC, he leads the Vertical Architectures, Memory, and Algorithms (VAMA) group whose research interests include agile hardware design, high-performance graph processing, parallel computing, and computer architecture. He also coaches the Not So Slow Slugs, a student cluster competition team which has reached the podium 4 times. He is active in diversity service, working with CAHSI, Cal-Bridge, UC LEADS, and UCSC's BEES.
