This shared conversation will offer a situated perspective from the Colombian Caribbean, highlighting the deep interconnections between ecosystems and the communities that inhabit them. We will share experiences from research projects aimed at understanding ecological and social vulnerability in coastal, riverine, and insular territories, and at strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change and structural inequalities.
Through concrete cases, such as mangrove restoration, risk management in insular ecosystems, and the integration of ancestral knowledge in water governance, we will show how projects become spaces for co-creation between science, technology, and local knowledge. This dialogue invites reflection on sustainability from the lenses of environmental justice, gender equity, and territorial peacebuilding.

Dr Ana Cristina de la Parra Guerra: Master’s in Biology and Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology, she is a full-time professor and researcher at the Department of Natural and Exact Sciences, Universidad de la Costa (CUC). Her work focuses on aquatic ecology, limnology, and environmental toxicology, with emphasis on the assessment of ecotoxicological risks and emerging contaminants in aquatic and coastal ecosystems. As a  fellow of the “Orquídeas: Women in Science” program, she promotes initiatives that strengthen the participation of women scientists in territorial transformation and socio-environmental resilience building in the Colombian Caribbean.

Dr Ana Carolina Torregroza Espinosa: Ph.D. in Marine Science (Universidad del Norte), with a background in Fisheries Engineering and a Master’s in Aquaculture and Ecology (Universidad del Magdalena). She currently serves as Dean of the Department of Natural and Exact Sciences at the Universidad de la Costa (CUC), leading academic, research, and extension processes. A fellow of the “Orquídeas: Women in Science” program, she has extensive experience in interdisciplinary projects on coastal and river ecosystems, microplastics, biodiversity conservation, and ancestral knowledge as a foundation for environmental management and peacebuilding. Her work integrates science, technology, and community knowledge to promote sustainable and equitable development models in the Colombian Caribbean.
