The Women's Resources Center will be offering a 4-session book club on "Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus" by Dr Jennifer Hirsch and Dr Shamus Khan as part of our programming for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
About the Book: Sexual Citizens reveals the social ecosystem that makes sexual assault a predictable element of life on a college campus. The powerful concepts of sexual projects, sexual citizenship, and sexual geographies, provide a new language for understanding the forces that shape young people’s sexual relationships. The result transforms our understanding of sexual assault and provides a new roadmap for how to address it. This book features students' stories about their experiences, including sexual assault. As such, it can be a very powerful and disturbing reading experience.
Eligibility: The book club is open to all members of the UIUC community.
Sessions: We will be offering several different sessions of this book club, each taking place at a different day/time. Each session will meet 4 times over the course of April, following a suggested reading schedule (but participants are welcome to join if they haven't completed the suggested readings!!!).
Undergraduate students should attend student-led sessions; graduate students should attend gradute-student-led discussions; and faculty & staff should attend faculty/staff-led discussions. Each session will be limited to 15 participants.
Expectations: Participants are expected to attend at least 3 of the 4 book club meetings and try to read the suggested chapters for the meetings.
