Reading and Reception of Canonical Texts in East Asia: A Symposium
Thursday, April 21 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. CDT via Zoom

In this panel, three renowned experts discuss the rich reception histories of several major canonical texts of China, Korea, and Japan. Analyzing iterations in media ranging from ancient bronze vessels to modern manga and film, the three panelists explore the rich cultural life of these works from ancient times to the present.

About the Speakers

Zhi Chen is Chair Professor and Director of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University and Provost of the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. His publications include The Shaping of the Book of Songs: From Ritualization to Secularization (2007).

Gergana Ivanova is Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture at the University of Cincinnati. She is the author of Unbinding The Pillow Book: The Many Lives of a Japanese Classic (Columbia University Press, 2018).

Minsoo Kang is Professor of History at the University of Missouri St-Louis. He is the author of Sublime Dreams of Living Machines: The Automaton in the European Imagination (Harvard University Press, 2011) and Invincible and Righteous Outlaw: The Korean Hero Hong Gildong in Literature, History, and Culture (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2018)

The Chi Lung Kang Endowed Lecture Series

This symposium is one of the serial events of the 2022 Chi Lung Kang Endowed Lecture Series. The Chi Lung Kang Endowment was established to honor the memory of Chi Lung (Charles) Kang, a PhD graduate of UIUC’s electrical engineering program. Its purpose is to promote dialogue and understanding about China, within the University and in the wider community.
