Timothy Blauvelt, Ilia State UniversityAs a highly multiethnic and multilingual region divided among multiple sovereign states, the Caucasus (both North and South) presents many challenges and opportunities for Euro-Atlantic researchers. This roundtable of archivists and researchers representing the North Caucasus, Georgia, and the Euro-Atlantic scholarly milieu will explore the documentary history of the region and the ways in which archival materials are (and are not) accessible to researchers today, including the effects of shifting borders and political transformations on archival collections. A variety of ways to conceptualize archival services (and of the optimal ways to make archival collections available for research) will be considered. Opportunities for interested scholars and librarians to connect with archives and archival collections in the Caucasus will also be discussed. A companion roundtable focusing on libraries and library collections in the Caucasus will take place from 9:00-10:45 am (Central Time)
Part of the first installment of the Engagement with Underrepresented Regions in REE&E. This three-year pilot program is a joint collaboration between ASEEES, ASEEES CLIR, and the Slavic Reference Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to engage with librarians, archivists, and other information professionals from underrepresented regions within Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. The inaugural event will feature two roundtable discussions in conjunction with the annual convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (https://www.aseees.org/convention).
