New Particle Searches with Nonlinear Optics

Abstract:  In this talk I will discuss new interplays of paticle physics and optics. I will present motivated new physics models, such as axions and dark photons, as extensions to optics. In this light, new ways to search for new physics are possible at the optics table. I will focus on "Dark SPDC", a process by which a pump photon down converts (or decays) to a new invisible idelr particle and an associated signal photon. This is the optical counterpart to missing energy signals for new physics which are commonplace in colliders. The calculation of the dSPDC rate in a waveguide, and its scaling with the system parameters, will be presented, as well as other opportunities for dark matter searches with optics tools.

Bio: Roni is a theoretical physicist working on models of physics beyond the standard model and ways to test them. He received his PhD at Berkeley in 2005, was a postdoc at SLAC and Stanford, and Joined Fermilab in 2010. He is the head of the Fermilab Quantum Theory Department and is the Science Thrust Lead of the Fermilab-lead SQMS NQI Research Center.
