A multi-scale perspective on impactful weather in mountainous regions

Flash flooding, damaging hail, and critical snowpack all represent impactful outcomes of precipitating systems in mountainous regions. These impacts are produced by a variety of storm types in a wide range of environmental conditions influenced by unique topographic features, challenging our understanding and prediction. Toward reducing these uncertainties, field campaigns provide the means to target specific regions with a suite of instrumentation including deployable radars that allow for new insights into mesoscale and microphysical processes leading to high-impact mountain-influenced weather. This presentation focuses primarily on recent field campaigns in Argentina (2018 RELAMPAGO) and Taiwan (2022 PRECIP), highlighting key results from field observations and related modeling studies, including lessons learned and opportunities for future work.
