Linguistics Seminar Series Workshop: State-of-the-art lit reviews vs systematic research syntheses vs AI syntheses: Why these are not created equal

The aim of this seminar is to compare three types of lit reviews: state-of-the-art (SotA), systematic research synthesis (SRS), and AI-generated.
We will begin with a mini-lecture (15 mins.) on the difference between SotA and SRS, in terms of aims, authorship, and affordances—and why SotA is almost always high quality while SRS is mixed quality.
We will next examine two examples, one SotA and one SRS, to analyze what makes them “good” (15 mins.).
We will next try an experiment: to query AI so that it can generate either a high-quality SotA or SRS on audience members’ research topics (15 mins.).
We will end with a discussion of 1) the limitations of getting AI to introduce the field to you if you are new to it, 2) Why SoTA or even SRS might be more efficient, and 3) What AI can be used for, if not that. (15 mins.)
