The fluctuation-dissipation theorem establishes a connection between the thermodynamic fluctuations of some variable and the dissipation associated with the response of that variable to external forcing. In this informal talk, I’ll give an explanation of this theorem which anyone from Senior to Freshmen can follow, if not understand. Integral to this seminar will be linear response theory, a tool used extensively in condensed matter physics. I hope to convey why I think this theorem is interesting and worth learning, and give a number of physical examples to motivate the mathematics.
