Abstract: How many local random operations does it take to generate global randomness? We develop an algorithm to determine when a random quantum circuit can be distinguished from a maximally random global unitary. We use this technique to explore a number of open questions. We study how quantum information scrambling depends on geometric locality, discuss which experiments you should use if you need to distinguish between ensembles, and investigate the relationship between anticoncentration and unitary 2-designs. This talk is based on arXiv:2510.23726.
