Dr. Cromley will present on two studies comparing writing with Word vs. ChatGPT. Data were collected on during-reading and during-writing processes, essay scores, and learning posttests. Learning was worse using ChatGPT only when reading was made optional. With reading optional, writers who knew they would write using ChatGPT adopted shallow reading strategies during a reading phase and also when reading what ChatGPT wrote. With reading required, there were no differences in posttest learning, but some during-learning process differences.
