Religious Observances

A service held in Episcopal Churches (and others) as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus on the evening of Holy Saturday (the evening prior to the Sunday of the Resurrection or Easter Day). Historically, it is during this service that people (especially adults) are baptized. It is held in the hours of darkness between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Day. The service features the lighting of the new Paschal fire, a vigil of readings from the New Testament, Baptisms, and the celebration of the first Eucharist of Easter.
