Mentors, advisors, and sponsors are all important in your development as a scholar and researcher as you move through your CS career. In this session you will learn about how people in each of these roles will support your development and growth, how to connect with each, and the various opportunities we have within the Illinois CS community to connect with mentors, advisors, and sponsors!

Wade

Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider
Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider is a Teaching Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). With a passion for data, he often teaches thousands of students each year in his courses on Data Structures, Data Visualization, and Data Science. He was selected as one of the National Academy of Engineering’s Frontiers of Engineering Education scholars, awarded the Collins Award for Innovation Teaching, and has been consistently ranked as an excellent instructor by his students for the past ten years. His work on data visualizations has been used by governors of multiple states, featured by websites including Popular Mechanics and The Verge, and has been viewed by millions of readers. 


Ruta

Ruta Mehta
Ruta Mehta is an Associate Professor of Computer Science, an affiliate of Coordinated Science Laboratory, and a founding member of AImpact Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining UIUC, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Simons Institute, UC Berkeley, and at College of Computing, Georgia Tech. She received her Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. Her research is at the intersection of theoretical computer science, economics, games theory, and machine learning. She on the editorial board of Math. of Operations Research (MOR) and Algorithmica, and has served as chair for flagship conferences and events. For her research, she has received the NSF CAREER Award, the Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship, and the Best Postdoctoral Award (given by CoC@GT). Her Ph.D. thesis won the ACM India Doctoral Dissertation Award and the IIT-Bombay Excellence in Ph.D. Thesis Award.
