Dr. Maria Hadjipolycarpou, Teaching Assistant Professor, Department of Classics and Director of Modern Greek Studies will give lunch talk, "Class, Gender, and Secularization in Costas Montis’ Afentis Batistas and the Other Things" on Thursday, October 22nd. This presentation offers an overview of how Costas Montis responds to national ideologies in his prose and poetry. Set against Cyprus’s layered Venetian, Ottoman, British, and Hellenic histories, his work explores how social roles, religious affiliations, and ethnic identities intersect across communal boundaries. It argues that, even as he helps shape the Modern Greek literary canon, Montis resists its homogenizing tendencies and creates space for erased voices not bound to a single nation, fitting his identity as an archipelagic subject.
